The New Forest is a National Park and a prime tourist place located in Hampshire in the South East of England. The New Forest is a popular self catering cottage destination as this is the South East of England's closest National Park. The park lies within the country of Hampshire and also extends in to a small part of Wiltshire. The New Forest is Britain's smallest National Park and was originally established by William I in 1079 as a deer hunting area for him and his noblemen. This park is a rare blend of open heathlands and ancient woodlands, which is affectionately called by the locals as forest. This is indeed a special place that has remained relatively unchanged over the centuries. The New Forest and the immediate surrounding area was awarded the status of National Park in March 2005.
Interesting Facts about the New Forest
Some visitors find the term New Forest misleading because this place is neither new nor is a forest in the present sense. Rather it is a combination of open heath and gorselands that are intermixed with forested enclosures. To prevent local peasantry from interfering with the pursuit of deer in the New Forest, William I introduced the Forest Law, which was a strict legal code. The peasants were restricted from enclosing land for agriculture and to erect fences or barriers in the park, although, they were allowed to graze cattle, ponies and pigs across the forest.
